Can't recommend this place enough. The shop itself is well-stocked with all the outdoor gear you may need. Next door is the rental shop where you can rent skis (cross country and down hill). Prices are very fair- we rented a cross country set including skating skis, boots and poles for $60/day. Better prices than REI (even if you have the 30% off membership price). Recommend you call at least a day ahead to reserve the gear, especially during high traffic times like the winter break.

Great rental shop! Very well-cared for equipment and some brand new stuff too. They do tuning, servicing and some repairs. Got outfitted for 4 pax, 2 pairs of skis and 2 boards at very affordable prices. We’re excited to hit the slopes this weekend! Bonus: Roscoe the pupper was in the shop too!!

We bought bear spray here way cheaper than you can get it new-in-package.  It hasn't been discharged, just pre-owned.

This is a magical hub where your Alaskan adventures are supported. Probably the best place to find core climbing and mountaineering gear in the state.

Very nice and helpful staff and great gear for the price. I’m a travel nurse on assignment and want to experience Alaska without the huge price tag of gear.

Had a great experience here, found some climbing shoes they no longer sell at REI at a great price.  The guy at the front desk was super kind and helpful!

The staff here are extremely knowledgeable. Dana was fantastic in getting me all set up with my first set of alpine ski gear and did a thorough job answering all of my questions. I learned a lot and walked out of the store super excited to use my new gear. The staff even helped me decide how to color-coordinate everything. 😆 Always a great experience here, and I highly recommend giving it a try!

Staff are friendly and generally very knowledgeable. I’ve used the ski shop for repairs, tuning and binding mounts with excellent service and results so far!

This is a good place to shop for used gear and even better to consign your old gear if you want to avoid 92,000,000 "is it still available" responses on marketplace. I have never asked the employees here how many time on average someone asks them that in person before my item sells, but my guess is under 1 million. Either way I only have to show up and collect my check, which to be fair can feel a bit light at times, although you can't put a price on not selling on the wasteland that is marketplace.

This place is amazing and everyone is really helpful. We were in the market for ski gear. We found everyone helpful and informative, because gear can be confusing sometimes. When we had an issue with a piece of gear we purchased, they made it right. Great customer service.

When you place your item in consignment, you get half of what it sold for! It's such a relief after buying something for full price only to find out I would never use it and it was an impulse buy for me.. in my case, a backpack... but, someone else would appreciate it so much here! You'll find that the staff here is very knowledgeable about local events and the geographics of things, like hiking trails and such. They were very welcoming here, I felt like I could ask them anything about Alaskas outdoors and they would know just what I would need for it, what would fit the situation the best and what was just right for me. You know what a relief it is to know that people like this still exist? Its so refreshing. Thank you Marmot!!!

This place is like discount REI heaven. Some people must really be doing well to have turned in or some what they do here, there are some real gems. The prices are great, huge selection, everything you could find at REI for a fraction of the price.

After going to 2 other stores looking for a pair of touring skis for my wife, we’re so glad we came to the Hoarding Marmot! We were greeted with smiles and people who wanted to help us, shoutout to Naomi for showing us around and huge thank you for Henry for all his advice about getting a touring set up and fitting boots. We will definitely be coming back just because of how great the service was.

Very knowledgeable staff!!  I am new to skiing, I went and talked to a gentleman named Angus.  He helped me and my boyfriend get completely set up with skis and boots and poles and gloves.... EVERYTHING!!  I pestered him with a bunch of questions and he happily answered all of them plus gave extra information he thought we would need when it came to us getting outside to ski.  I really appreciate all the help he provided.  I do like to support small business and I thought it was great how knowledgeable the staff was.  I would definitely support this business again!!

Have had the opportunity to consign used and new gear with them a couple of times now. Always received fair pricing for consignment items. Inventory is constantly changing so check back often!

Great staff, great selection. The nice dogs will show you around to find gently used outdoor gear and appeal at a reasonable price. They also sell new items like water bottles and locally made stickers.

The Hoarding Marmot filled a much needed niche in Anchorage.  We are so happy that they opened and are doing well.  My husband and I bring old gear in all the time and love getting money back.   To those of you who say that the clothes are dirty... we've been politely asked to take clothes home and get the cat hair off before they will sell it.... so they have a standard here that we have witnessed.  The staff is friendly and helpful.  We LOVE this store and will always support it!

This is my second review of Hoarding Marmot. In the past few years they have expanded their storefront, carried more gear than before and after constantly doing great, new things. There is still nowhere else that I will go first before coming to Hoarding Marmot. The staff is always kind, knowledge and patient. Ten out of ten every time.

Dog friend place for sure!!

This is a great outdoor store offering gently used gear for hiking, camping, fishing, backpacking and more. They have sleeping bags and tents for all seasons, kayaking gear, camping equipment such as cooking utensils, burners, and storage containers such as beer proof barrels for food. The prices are the best in town short of going to a thrift store. And the owners and staff offer friendly help and advice about different gear and how they are used. You should definitely check out The Hoarding Marmot if you need outdoor stuff of any kind.

If I come into town for gear this is always the first place I stop. It's like Craigslist for outdoor gear, except you don't have to play phone tag and drive all over the city. More often than not, I end up finding what I need here for usually less than 1/4 of retail. Employees are very helpful, most seem to have experience in the industry, and not of your typical consignment shop variety.

I really like this store! I recently got into snow machining and wanted to find some warm clothes to replace my old snow gear. I didn't even know there was a consignment store for outdoor gear, what a life saver! The only way I found out about this place was doing some heavy digging online, need some good advertising somewhere!

Loved the prices and choices and stickers! They have and excellent selection of winter, spring, summer,or,fall,wear whenever it comes time and they mark down the attire so you have a chance to snag your next year's awesome snowboarding 🏂 wear! Super nice staff are knowledgeable about all the gear, climbing, ice, mountain or cave...and other stuff. You should check them out👍  oh The picture is of some boots they have there that I got.

It is so nice to have a place to bring my gently used, under-utilized gear.  There are other options for gear re-sale, but none of them as good as this LOCAL option. We rented a seasonal Nordic ski package. Service was good but they told us that the package would be 150$ but it was actually 200$!😡

Stopped in and they were friendly & encouraging. Honestly, found the prices on second hand a bit high but that might be because I’m an avid Thrifter/second hand shopper (could even say it’s a hobby) so don’t listen to me on that.

Was able to get a climbing helmet in like new condition for 50% off. Also found a really good pair of several times used Altra running shoes.

4/5 starts because I had to go back in when i realized they didnt ring up the discount I was supposed to get on one of the items.

Good atmosphere, helpful folks.  It’s a used gear shop, so the selection is a variety, sometimes awesome sometimes a dud, but always worth a try!  And the folks inside are incredibly helpful and good with answering gear questions.

Super friendly! They let my dads friend bring her dog in! The shoes they had were nice and overall it's cheap with nice stuff. One problem though, I don't think they cleaned this one part of the store because It was very dusty and I ended up having trouble breathing. I could tell many did aswell

Super cool! I didn't know this place existed until a friend of mine brought me there this past week. Very nice clothing, camping, snowboarding, skiing, and bicycling accessories for a more than fair price! I couldn't stop admiring the Jeep full suspension electric mountain bike. What a beauty! Staff was nice and helpful. I'll be returning to this store again.

As for the clothes and shoes, we try and make sure items are clean but sometimes some good stuff sneaks through in less than ideal condition. We'll keep working to make sure things are washed and that the cleanliness factor is high!

Good place if you're looking for used gear. Found some great items for my dog. But the shoes and clothing were dirty. They should require the items be cleaned before placing them out on the floor.

A great spot to find just about any piece of outdoor gear you need! I find their used equipment is generally a little more expensive than I’d have expected it to be, but it’s still cheaper than buying new. They do an excellent job of weeding out the beat up and rough stuff, so the used stuff is almost always in really good shape! They’ve definitely grown since they opened, and the selection is much better than in the early days. I always check there before hitting up REI or AMH. Love this store!

Their new rental shop was fantastic! Great service and rental skis, I'll absolutely be back for more.

Their pricing on used clothing is a big flop though. Every item was heavily used, pilled, or stained and priced far too high for the condition. I found multiple last season items with heavy wear priced higher than current retail, which is confusing. Even after showing staff current pricing, they say they base it on original purchase price, despite poor condition of items.

If you need some new retail gear, it's a great local shop, but give the consignment portion a skip.

This place was cool I had to really dig to find good deals... Everything seemed a little expensive for used... Compared to marketplace and things like that nowadays... A lot of stuff I see at REI I saw there pretty close to the same price at least with REI you get money back at the end of the year... Staff wasn't all that helpful I felt like It was an  inconvenience..for asking questions I'm new to the area and wanted to know how the store worked I still actually don't know... The lady that was helping me didn't seem to want to share the information I had to pull it out of her... If you've got time to dig through there  and find good deals... Then give it a try

Great if you want to save a few dollars, but I feel most stuff is overpriced for well-used. I would rather spend a little extra for brand new. The last few times I went, I could have really used some help and some specs, but nobody offered. I probably won't go back.

As for pricing, we do carry a selection of new items to help customers utilize us as a one-stop-shop for outdoor outings as best we can and those items are priced at MSRP per our agreement with our vendors.

For consigned (used) items, we are more than happy to explain our pricing process and help you understand why an item might be priced higher than expected for a used item (upgrades to a bike, a footprint included with a tent, etc.).

Great selection although prices seem to be similar to retail for used gear. Sadly over heard a few employees in the back, bashing military that come to town that go hiking and rock climbing. You would think they would just be happy they are bringing business into town and be happy to share the outdoors.

The staff weren’t very friendly or indeed helpful. Too busy doing something else to talk to me. I had big bucks to spend on some kit for Denali, will go to eBay instead.

Long time shopper and account holder here, used to love going. They are changing things, was told that today by the guy behind the counter. So far the changes I see are higher prices and less friendly staff. Honestly REI is mostly junk and this place is just used REI products. Only difference is at hoarding marmot you don’t get the 10% back member benefits or sweet return policy like REI. You get what you pay for and if you want to sell your used gear you may do better selling it yourself. Looks like Anchorage is in need of a new used gear shop.

Hannah here! First off, apologies for the negative and understandably frustrating situation. It is certain that there were communication breakdowns on a few levels on our behalf, and though we all try our best unfortunately mistakes are made and this is one of them.  We hope you will reconsider your position on our store, and that you were able to find the right boot for your son!

I'm a fan of the focus on reusing gear. Hoarding Marmot helps people get a little value back when they're done with their old gear and it also helps people find decent gear without having to pay full retail prices. Because the store works on consignment (basically meaning they have a lot of private sellers to coordinate with, which can't be easy), the store does not typically process refunds. All sales are, understandably, final.
The last time I went to the store was to find a downhill ski boot for my son. I knew absolutely nothing about ski boots and asked a gentleman to help us. After I told him what skis and bindings we were using, he happily listed several need-to-know factors when selecting the kind of boot one would need for a typical day at a ski resort. He even pointed to a shelf and said, "any of these would do the job." After helping us with sizing, he left us to look through the boots on the shelf. We selected a pair, purchased them, and left town to have bindings mounted at a shop closer to home. That shop informed us that we had purchased alpine style boots that were not designed for my son's other gear or his intended use.
We immediately drove back to Anchorage, calling Hoarding Marmot during the drive to explain this unfortunate situation. A gentleman on the phone said they would refund the purchase for us. When we got back to the store we met with Hannah at the front counter. She certainly seemed like the expert who knew how to take care of this situation, but despite the assurance we received on the phone, Hannah told me she was not sure a refund was possible and had to check on something first (something to do with whether the seller claimed the money from the purchase yet. I'm not too sure). After three or four awkward minutes, Hannah, who seemed visibly annoyed that the store's policy was not being observed, told us that a refund was possible after all. She then said that even though she'll refund us, we should have remembered that sales are final and this situation never should have occurred. She said that in future if we are not sure about a product we should not purchase it. Hannah seemed unaware that the purchase was made wholly based on an employee's incorrect information. Perhaps it was the additional two hours of unplanned driving that day that left me mentally exhausted, or maybe it was Hannah's condescending slap-on-the-wrist tone with which she spoke to her customer. Whatever the cause, I felt sapped of any motivation to defend myself. I simply answered Hannah with a "Yes ma'am," I took my receipt, and I left the store.
I still think the Hoarding Marmot is a cool idea. I even think Hannah and the rest of the team there are probably very knowledgeable and great to work with in most situations. This was just an unfortunate incident where an employee made an incorrect recommendation and reversing that mistake involved unwarranted passive-aggressive treatment toward the customer. Who knows? Maybe it was the end of a long stressful day for Hannah et. al.
Whatever contributed to this, it was certainly an unpleasant experience for me. So, I've taken Hannah's advice. Since I can't trust employee assistance enough to "be sure" about a product before purchasing it, I will not burden the Hoarding Marmot with my lack of expertise anymore. I think it's a great business model and I wish them all the best with their remaining satisfied customers (of which I'm sure there are many; they won't miss me). Mindfulness and courtesy, perhaps, could be some key takeaways here to prevent a recurrence.

Bought a $500 pair of cross country skis, broke after 2 weeks, no warranty or refund. Skis used on groomed trails only.

This store has great gear at reasonable prices. But the three times I have visited I have been ignored, forgotten about or treated outright rudely. For context I asked someone what the difference between a mens and womens climbing harness was and got back a fairly hostile response. Wish it wasn’t the case as but I think I’ll just go to REI and pay a little more for a better experience.
