I have been visiting this store for years. I always find something special. Nancy created a very unique vibe. Always stop in when in town to say hello to Dan who is a genuine and funny. He is thoughtful and
remembers the things that are special to me. The staff is great the finds are great. Great experience!

The Cedar Chest is the best consignment store on the shoreline. The staff is kind and very helpful and Nancy, the owner, is very knowledgeable and researches every item.  I consign and buy; it is my favorite shopping in Connecticut and well worth the trip.  Everything is clean and in excellent condition…..and is appropriate for the season.  The prices are very reasonable and the sales are plentiful.

Our family has shopped and consigned here since they first opened in Old Saybrook...Wonderful staff, wonderful selection for anyone and everyone. As for Nancy Briggs, the owner, she is polite, smart and a very hard worker and the above review really doesn't truly reflect this business. If you haven't shopped here, try it..It is a small business that deserves our support...It is almost Christmas time and the store is full of wonders

You have Got to Shop here!! I have been a shopper at the Cedar Chest for years - LOVE this place and the amazing finds here are so cool.  This is not a quick visit store as you need time to look in all the nooks and crannies for that special item.  The pricing is fantastic - I love getting a bargain and this place always has great price on all my favorite brands.  I never leave without finding something for either my closet to wear or my house to decorate.  I love to flip furniture products and the Cedar Chest always has something for me to turn into a cool item in my house. The staff is always helpful and pleasant. If you love consignment and resale shopping then this is the place to go for sure - bring a friend and make a day of it - you won't regret it.

Yes, I did see that sign back in June and I also saw that she took it down within a week
Nancy gives you a discount for using cash which is legal in the state of Connecticut
She is just trying to stay afloat like the majority of business owners in this state during this pandemic
If you don’t like her policies don’t shop there, instead you are trying to ruin the business of a very hard working individual that only wants to stay open
Find something better to do with your time Scrooge!!!

My husband and I love shopping here and have no problem helping them stay in business by paying 4% extra if we use our credit cards. The owner is always very helpful and has great specials. We don't want her to raise her prices because it will be much higher than 4%
If we don't want to pay the extra money we will bring cash.
I hope you stay in business and get through this pandemic because you would be missed otherwise.

I've gotten lots of good clothes there but my big excitement was getting the Great Camelback couch and a corner hutch add a great deal.

Update: Feb 2020: Nancy and her team continue to accept items that will give clients who consign their best potential for return $$$. It only makes sense that request only clean and quality clothing, furniture and household items .  Dozens of years in business, both in multiple hi-traffic Shoreline locations and on-line, increases % share for sellers and buyers reap top labels for so much less- FAIR MARKET value, all around.

I got a pair of "Bear Paw" boots for $ 13. at Cedar Chest III; I went home and looked online and discovered that this particular style normally sells for between $ 100 and over $ 200. new....the pair I bought seemed hardly worn. I went back again and got a (again, hardly worn) Loft shirt for $ 4., and a St. John's Bay shirt for $ 3. I'm impressed with this place!!!

Hi Leatta! We try to remain as cost efficient while also providing value to our consignors. To help with the resale value which we base off of current resale values in the market, we always have two sales which are of great benefit and help inside the search in our wide variety of goods!

Glad to see you back Lynne and sorry for your disappointment. We can't raise our prices anymore, have to compete with the neighboring thrift stores. It was very hard for us to make the decision about the 4% but we wanted to stay open, not go out of business. Hope you can return.

Was excited to visit my favorite resale shop this morning. Always great, high quality merchandise. Disappointed as I approached the store and noticed the sign indicating 4% surcharge for using a credit card. First, I haven't used cash since Covid 19 started because cash goes through too many hands. Second, the surcharge the credit card companies charge is a cost of doing business. Either raise the prices to include the surcharge or stop accepting credit cards if you can't absorb the charge.

It is OK, this area has a plethora of antique shops and stores. All are the same and all probably barter over used items, and bid on estate auctions, storage, etc. It's always a toss up on product because it rotates, most if not all of the products are over priced items labeled as antiques but most are just used consumer commodities that might be an antique, or hold future value, but make sure you do your research and haggle on price, if you can.
To me these antique shops are just glorified pawn shops, not necessarily a bad thing but what I feel is true. It's a consumer mindset, but at least this store seems well organized and has decent product. Equal or greater than 4x cost rule seems to be used here but if it sits for a while they drop the price down, not much at all but some. Also make sure you heed the warnings, no sitting on the furniture, it feels like it's ran by my grandma and does not seem kid friendly. Glorified consignment, over priced, no sitting, clean, organized, pawn sho... sorry, I mean, antique shop.

They have quality control issues in both this store and in clinton. A dress for 35.00/with a ink stain?? They have a good selection but you really have to scrutinize the clothing before purchasing ...I've had to throw out a few items after purchase because I noticed something when I got home but failed to notice at the store.

Sorry you were not happy with our prices. We now price items because we also sell on Ebay and those are the prices we are getting there. Not sure if you know about our sales, we have 2 discounts each week on the different colors and once every other month, we have a 40% discount on the entire store. We also have a markdown rack that is 75% off and one that is 2 for $5.00. I hope you can give us another chance, just ask for the owner Nancy and I will help you find the discounts.

This place is outrageous with their prices. I picked up a pair of pants that was $30. I can go to TJ Maxx or Marshalls and get the same pair of pants brand new for $30. I picked up a necklace and it was $60 just a plain old black silver necklace. If you’re a consignment shop why are you pricing close at retail value? I love thrift shopping I will never shop there ever again it’s way too expensive and there is no reason for you guys to be that expensive if you’re a “consignment shop”. And by the way your employees are very rude especially one of the ladies in the back she acted like she didn’t wanna help me. The only person that was very nice I didn’t know his name but he said he was captain America. He was sweet as pie otherwise the other people they can eat dirt

Sorry you feel that way Bobby. We are a consignment store, not thrift. What that means is we have to pay the person that brought the item in. Thrift stores have donations, and don't have to pay anyone. We also have sales all the time. Yesterday, the blue tags were half price, so your lamp might have been 50% off. I was in saybrook yesterday and happened to stop in the place is way to overpriced I looked at a lamp they wanted $40 for it I don’t even pay that when I shop goodwill and always thought goodwill was expensive I think this place takes the cake and it’s literally all junk that only rich people can afford

Dont consign there , they will take you items and at the end you  wont get money nor the items , this practice should be illegal .

I brought in beautiful, high end items. They accepted several but refused 2 lovely new quilted cotton handbags that had never been used, saying they smelled like mothballs. I nor anything I own has ever been NEAR a mothball! Meanwhile, their whole store smells something like moth balls. Nasty oder. The staff (everyone I'VE dealt with) is cranky, impatient and seemingly hate their jobs. Nice AC tho.

We're very sorry that your wife arrived after consignment hours. We normally do not take donations as we are a consignment store. We wish there were more hours in the day!

My wife went here a few days ago to bring some things to this consignment shop and the lady refused to accept them saying they don't take donations after 4 PM, it was 4:30.... I don't understand how a business that survives off of people volunteering to bring things in to them to sell so they can stay in business would turn away a donation?? They are open till 7 PM, so its not like she was coming in at the last minute either ... The staff was very rude to her and I would strongly advise that you avoid shopping here or trying to donate anything, until they can provide a better experience to their customers this place should be a place to avoid.
