The Apalachicola Sponge Company is a family-owned store located in the charming coastal town of Apalachicola, Florida. Established in 1978, this beloved destination has been a go-to source for natural sponges, handcrafted soaps, and rare Tupelo honey for both locals and tourists.
At the heart of the store's inventory are the natural sea sponges harvested from the nearby Gulf waters. Customers can browse an impressive array of sponges in a variety of shapes, sizes, and textures, each one a testament to the rich marine life of the region. The store's knowledgeable staff is always on hand to guide visitors through the selection and share insights about the sponges' unique properties and uses.
Beyond the sponges, the Apalachicola Sponge Company features a selection of handmade goat's milk and olive oil soaps, crafted using traditional methods and infused with essential oils and natural botanicals. The store's high-quality, all-natural soap products are popular with both locals and tourists seeking sustainable, eco-friendly options.
One of the store's true specialties is its rare and exotic Tupelo honey, a local delicacy prized for its unique flavor and health benefits. Visitors can sample this liquid gold and learn about the fascinating story behind the Tupelo tree, which only blooms for a brief period each year, giving the honey its distinctive taste. The store's knowledgeable staff is always eager to share their expertise on the honey's origins and production process.
For those seeking unique home decor and antique treasures, the Apalachicola Sponge Company offers a wide range of vintage and one-of-a-kind items, from coastal-inspired artwork to repurposed furniture and nautical accents. The store's well-curated selection perfectly captures the charm and character of the local area.
Located in the heart of Apalachicola, the Apalachicola Sponge Company is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm, making it an easily accessible stop for those exploring the town. With free parking available and a wheelchair-friendly entrance, the store is welcoming to all visitors. Customers consistently praise the store's exceptional customer service, with many highlighting the expertise and friendly demeanor of the store's manager, Rebecca.
Beyond the store's diverse offerings, the Apalachicola Sponge Company is also a gateway to the rich history and culture of the surrounding area. Visitors can explore the town's historic waterfront, visit the nearby Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, or indulge in the local seafood scene, all within a short distance of the store. Nice store to browse. Sponges and scrubs among other things. I enjoyed my purchase
Thanks so much! Comments like this are what makes it worth going to work for..... and, you did say you enjoyed your purchase! We have alot of unique items to consider taking home and usually a good description or explanation of your purchase. We dunk a natural sponge into a mold of goats milk soap and let it solidify for a new shower or bath experience. Thats just one cool thing we sell here. Ya'll come back! Absolutely wonderful shop with gorgeous sponges, delightful soaps and much more. The employee who was working during our visit was welcoming and helpful. This will definitely be on my "return to" list for my next trip to the area in March. I only wish I'd bought more soaps!

I’d never want to, even unintentionally, ruin a business’s reputation. Thank you for clearing up the misunderstanding and I’m sorry I missed out of seeing your nice store. I’ve heard great things about it. As for your neighbor’s store - thank you for sharing my concerns with them. I do appreciate it. For your response and attention to my concerns, I give you 5 stars. Again - I apologize for jumping to conclusions. I guess we can expect to see my review at your neighbor’s store instead.
Alicia, The sign you're referrring to is not in our window. It is in the window next door at Reel Memories. I've shared your comments with them.

I first would like to say to ALICIA PIZON you missed out!! It’s sad you gave such a bad review because you thought the sign you saw belonged to Apalachicola Sponge Co in which it belongs to a store beside it. Apalachicola Sponge Company is a awesome gift shop!! I love the natural sea sponges that come from this area. And also the homemade goats milk and olive oil soaps with the sponges in them. What a great idea!!! Great as gifts also. This store has even more than that to offer!! Clothing, hats, beautiful tiles, fizz balls, and even some antiques and rugs!! Wow! It’s such an assortment of items!
Laura, Thank you for your kind review. We like to think that we offer a little something for everyone. Soon to be put on display are Native American arrowheads from the southeastern US.

I love this store. I recently purchased a metal cockatiel there & he loves being on my porch. I find the sponge history to be fascinating & there are pictures ( I believe of the 1800's) when the entire town center was filled with sponges that they were havested & for sale. Such an interesting place.
Thank you Janet!
