You don't get much if you're selling, even with some high value items.
They have a good selection of books and other media, a little overpriced imo.

Amazing variety for all ages. Resale and new books, video games, board games, music and more. Could spend hours and thousands of $ in here. If only my husband would let me 🤭

I love 2nd and Charles!!!! They always have so many books to choose from and at a good price as well. The employees are always very friendly and helpful.

There's always so much to find! Books, games, and other eclectic items! I like to visit every few  months when there's new inventory to view. I made the mistake once of not buying some items I was interested in, and when I came back, they were gone! If there's something you want, and it's priced good, buy it! You never know who else may be interested in the same collectibles.

An absolutely amazing book store and intend on going back again tomorrow. Has new and used books, records, collectible items, and much more. Great book store and hope it has nothing but success and sticks around a while.

this place is INSANELY GOOD, so many great things, including the redneck 2024 history books, Bob Dylan lyrics explained and hundreds of Funko Pops and sex education books from the 80s. the prices are decent, really. a must visit for all the geeky kids out there 🖤

My first time there and I about lost my mind!!!

Our absolute favorite books-and-more store! They sell both used and new books, so you can find both brand new releases (at normal price) and many copies of slightly older books for a few dollars each. They are also an amazing place to look for gifts. They have lots of cute themed items, from Disney and Pokémon to witchy vibes and DnD. Their book trade-in program is also fantastic. You won't get tons of money - they do need to make a profit - but you get more than you would if you just donated them. And if you take the payment in store credit, it's often almost twice as much as the offer in cash. Highly recommend!

Fun store for Funko Pops, books, comics, and games. It feels very open and the selection is amazing. I found some Nintendo games that I am excited about.

This is literally one of my favorite stores to go to. If you're a nerd in any sense of the word, this place has something for you. From classic comics to movies to figurines to vinyls, they have everything; not to mention the humongous book collection.

2nd Charles is good for books but also people who love anime and sanrio.

A large selection with something for everyone. They also sell used books along with new books, music, instruments, and collectibles. My only criticism is their new releases seemed a little thin. Overall a great choice with great deals on used books.

It's clean and pretty organized environment for a place that sells both new and used stuff. I usually go just to see if something catches my eye or because I'm in the area. I just wish I could find all the volumes of manga/light novel series but often the first few are gone for the ones I read but that pretty much anywhere you go retail so I can't hold that against them.

The GM at the Newport News store, Alex, is beyond amazing.  I love 2nd & Charles, and do my best to stop in every time I am in town - but this trip to the store was special.  Alex went out of their way to help me, and even let me know there was a used copy of a book I was ready to pay full price for. The store also has a pretty decent collection of Boneyard mystery figures.

New and clean used books, all music, audio formats, toys, hobbies, games and more super store. Prices are great for even the new stuff. Huge warehouse size store with lots of space, room to roam and explore. Super organized and friendly relaxed staff. Very pleasurable shopping and just browsing experience.

How had I never heard of this place before?? I had a friend tell me about it last week and I finally had the opportunity to visit. This place was absolute bookworm and nerd heaven. To begin with, they buy used books, movies, games, vinyl, etc.  I filled two of their bins with books and comics to sell to them. The process is pretty easy and straightforward. You leave your stuff, they go through it and contact you within a few hours with either a cash or store credit offer. The really awesome thing is that you can use your store credit on anything in the store! The hardest part is determining what to use your credit on as they have such an amazing selection of new & used books, along with toys, games, movies, and so much more. I've already told family I wouldn't complain if I got a gift certificate for my upcomimg birthday or Christmas. I didn't want to leave and am already looking forward to my next visit.

I was a bit hesitant to stop by because I read quite a few reviews of how expensive it was for a “used/secondhand store,” but I decided to go anyways. It’s a bit of a drive from my house, but well worth it. I think where people go wrong, is believing it’s solely a secondhand shop. They have new items/books as well, so those are retail price, the same as you’d find at Barnes and Noble or any other big retail store. The used books I found ranged from as little as $2 to $10 depending on how new and popular it was,  which seems fair to me. There’s even a clearance book section. I obviously didn’t look at every single book in store, but from what I saw, I wouldn’t say it’s overpriced. I found a decent amount of funkos and other collectibles I haven’t seen elsewhere, so that was exciting for me. The store is pretty big, clean, and well stocked and will probably become my favorite as I’ll definitely be going back. It’s the closest store I’ve found that reminds me of my local Half price books back in Illinois. I only wish the horror section were bigger.

This is my favorite bookstore/music/film in Newport News. I think it is mostly supposed to be a used book and record store but they sell a variety of new and used media products: video games, board games, musical instruments, pop culture t-shirts, and more. Their prices are always reasonable and sometimes surprisingly good (I've gotten a variety of collectible novels and games for super cheap here). Although my interactions with the staff has been brief, they are generally nice. But this needs to be said: one thing I really don't like about this place is how they always ask you subscribe to magazines at the register "for free." Sigh. It's so patronizing. Everyone knows that eventually a free magazine subscription becomes invoiced. So, it's not really free from a certain perspective. Even worse, instead of asking, "Would you like to subscribe to this or that magazine" they say, "And what magazine would you like to subscribe to today?" It's icky and uncool. This conplaint aside, this is a great place.

Love this store! Everything you didn't know you needed, they have. I can get lost for hours. Books, games, movies,music, instruments, movie memorabilia...you name it. Great store!

I love, love, love this store. I’ve slowly been bringing in books that I’ve had lying around for ages. I get credit to buy “new-to-me” books, which are generally other people’s old books. They have a great selection of new items, as well as DVD’s, video games, vinyl records, gifts, and novelty items. I’ve spent hours in this store browsing the shelves. They’re sure to have something that would interest you!

Cool stuff, but the vinyl needs more organization .  Cool little place.

This store rivals Barnes and Noble. It's absolutely HUGE with a fantastic selection of books, DVDs, games, music and more. They sell both new and used, so look for the orange sticker if you want a cheaper price.

I've been here several times and have enjoyed every visit. You can find some great deals if you know where to look. There's several tables of $6 and under books that have a good selection.

The trade program is okay. I wish it paid a little more store credit (I got just under $30 for roughly 25 books, I didn't count) but it's worth it depending on how many used books you buy.

The rewards program, however, absolutely sucks. It's 1 point for each $1 spent, but you have to get 150 points before you get a $5 reward. So you have to spend $150 before you get $5 back. I understand from a business perspective not having the rewards attainable after only spending a little bit, but come on. $5 is a drop in the bucket after spending so much in comparison. Store credit goes MUCH further than that, so bring your trades!

This place is a great reused book store. Not to mention the other items you can get besides books. Definitely a place worth visiting over and over.

I like this store a lot, but its price model can be somewhat of a cash-grab on trendy or popular titles. Not hating on them for it, but it is good to know before you go. You will for sure find great deals, but you will also find stuff at full MSRP.

The prices are a bit high but other than that staff is great and a cool place to shop around for unique items and gifts

I absolutely love this place… the books, the coffee mugs, the t-shirts, etc. I could be in there for hours! My only gripe is that while it’s marked as a second hand bookstore, a large selection of the books are actually just full price. In which case you’re better off buying from Target (20% off) or Amazon (unfortunately).

One of the better places around to be able to sell unwanted books.  It does take a while to get a quote back.  The other issue is that their selection of books is not as well organized as it could be.  A single author can be in two different categories.  In order to figure out if the author or book you are interested in is available you need to go to the cashier.  This can take a while if there are other customers waiting as well.  A book search kiosk would be highly helpful.

This was my first time visiting a 2nd & Charles. I was impressed by the massive selection of movies, music, books, games etc. There is something for everybody to look at in the store. I do think the prices could be better, as some of the games in particular did feel a bit oddly priced. JP was very helpful and we had a great conversation. Great store to visit if you're looking for novelty gifts!

A fairly large assortment of collectibles, music, books, and other media line the shelves. The establishment is fairly organized but the pricing could be better. Obviously they need to pay staff but a lot of prices are worse than if you were to buy an item elsewhere on the secondary market such as eBay.

Clean establishment. A few books are marked down and a good deal, most not too far off from msrp, and the rest full price. Guitar stuff, weeb stuff, new books and some rare books. Overall an interesting place.

2 month update: No one bothers you while browsing and reading, which us nice. But flip side kids run rampant making a ton of noise scrambling legos, banging on the musical instruments, and running.

Stopped in on a day where they had a penny a page sale. Bought four books in a series I’m reading for about $12! Great deals on used books, and when you’re done reading them, you can sell them back for either store credit or cash.

Generally I LOVE 2nd & Charles however, this location has changed its layout and not for the better.  Where there used to be books, now the walls are lined with row after row of Funko Pop figures (as of 1/2/25) and I am not visiting a BOOKSTORE to buy Funko Pop Figures.

Took couple hundred sci-fi paperbacks in decent shape.  Got offered $26.50 for the lot - about 10 cents. Never again.  I'd rather given them to DAV.

Not alot of variety when it came to metal and rock albums especially in the cds there wasn't alot of variety for alot of genres   left disappointed prices for cds were pretty nice but not a good section.

Nice place to trade in old stuff, but a lot less of their stock is secondhand than I thought.
Many goods are at a higher price than you could find at other stores.
Some people won’t mind this, it just surprised me compared to other secondhand media stores I’ve been to.

Super sad today. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars here, and am signed up for text and email promotionals. Was super excited about a 50% off sale going on for DVDS, but deleted the text thread (because I get so many that it clogs up my messages). Waited in line for about 20 minutes to ask about the promotional going on, and when I got up there the cashier was not helpful at all. She made no attempts to help and was very dismissive. I asked if there was anything I could do at all or if there was any way she could check if it was even going on (I knew already but just wanted help), and was met with “no link, outta luck. next in line.” I was extremely frustrated at this point and just put the show back… Long wait, no substantial help, AND the show was $35 USED. Half priced was probably the only time I would buy a DVD in general, not coming back anytime soon. (I understand being unable to help, but there was no attempt at all and she made me feel like I was “bothering” her by asking. I spent like 1 minute actually being assisted vs the wait time)

Brought in two full bags of books and got $9…which I know they’re going to sell for at least quadruple the price. At this point, you’re better off doing some good and donating them to teachers or even those little libraries that are put around schools.

From a buyers standpoint, they have some interesting finds but the prices are expensive. That is crazy to me because they give people cents for their books and up charge USED books close to the original sale price you’d find them if they were new. Also, the costumer service here is always horrible. They act like you’re a bother to them. I’ve gone in here many times as a local costumer, and I’ve never had one positive interaction.

My first visit was awesome but when I went back the cashier was super rude for no reason and acted as if she was put off by having to serve me. I’d rather drive to Virginia Beach location than waste my money at the Newport News location again.
